Sensory Processing Disorder is the difficulty of interpreting multiple sensory inputs at the same time. The result is a constant feeling of being bombarded with sensory information leading to increased anxiety. SPD is often a determining factor for those found to be on the spectrum.
Common difficulties:
-
Sitting in a classroom with bright lights or moving objects
-
Wearing appropriate clothes such as coats with long sleeves
-
Coping with the noise and confusion of school hallways or lunchrooms
-
Responding appropriately to touch or pain
Often times their only escape from this sensory overload is to remove themselves from the situation to calm down
